I remember when I were a lad, "Free Software" was something that you wrote, not worried about funding… I get what Simon is saying, agree with it even, but I almost ache for the days when you just fired up EMACS and wrote something useful and shared it, and you didn't need to "establish a community" because you would inevitably get one through the USENET group on which you announced. Nowadays it's like some projects start with the logo and work downwards…
