Surgery Status Update: Good

Arthroscopy done, sodding enormous screws out (alas not allowed to keep them, approximately M8-size 75mm hollow bronze screws with ball-head hex insert) – small loose fragment of bone-encased-in-cartilage was removed, probably was the cause of the clicking. Painkillers wearing off, knee feels like it’s been whapped with a cricket bat, but spinal anaesthetic was much less of a deal than I thought.

Curiously the last thing that comes back to you (men) is your genitals. It’s an odd sensation to not have any for a few hours.

Knee assessment “better than [consultant] could possibly have hoped-for, but some damage still evident. More info in 6 weeks followup X-ray.”

Am under orders to “take it easy and keep it elevated and no driving” for 2 days. Apparently I won’t *want* to drive for 4 days. Tomorrow I remove bandages, apply dressings and install a tubigrip to the knee. Should be walking with a stick for a few days, normally(ish) friday, stitches out in 10 days, no flying for 4 weeks.

Pics to follow. 🙂

  1. That’s good news. Hopesfully you won’t have to have any more surgery on it in the future.

I guess that you’ll be pootling around the house for the next few days then and getting a bit bored.

For your information, in case you’re interested, Em & Jerry will be visiting me this coming weekend. I’m not sure what we’re going to do yet, I had an idea about having a picnic at the Harcourt arboretum(sp?) if the weather’s nice. If it happens you’re welcome to pop over.

  2. Spinal anaesthetic rocks. But, like you say, very weird.

When I had my knee operation the thing that I found most disconcerting about the spinal anaesthetic was when they asked me to raise my legs (just after applying the anaesthetic) and they wouldn’t work… the doc had to tell me to relax, as somehow I didn’t want to stop trying.
