IXUS 900 – Hi Res Pussycat Picture

The 10 megapixel, titanium-shelled IXUS 900 arrived; first impressions are: my god, that’s lightweight compared to the old 400.

Some sort of actual review will come when I can provide worthwhile feedback, but in the meantime here’s a superfine full-size picture for all you cat fans out there…

    Kewl Alex,

I too just got one of these Canon SD900’s. It replaces a Ricoh Caplio R4 (which replaced a Ricoh Caplio R3).

I’m sending the SD900 back for a replacement. The dummies at Newegg sent me what looks like a demo unit in an open box. When I cough up $500, I want something new in a sealed box.

    Other than that, eager anticipation!

Nice piccy. The definition on Busters fuzzy face is excellent. He’s looking at you as if you are unwanted paparazzi 😉

    Cat’s are funny!

I’m not too keen on the bokeh generated by the lens in the top left corner of the picture (grass leaves). Still, it’s a built-in lens on a consumer point and shoot camera so you can’t expect miracles I s’pose.

Well that was one-handed and stooped, grabbing a snap before he moved. I look forward to trying a more serious test shot. 🙂

    Steve,

It’s a fantastically detailed picture of Buster’s face. I am very impressed with that. The background is ok so I wouldn’t be worried about it. If you’ve ever tried taking a good photograph of a cat you’d be amazed at this shot.

I am trying to take a nice photograph (note nice, not excellent, not even good) of Kepler for Laura to stick in her album. Laura can’t even manage to keep Keppie in shot. I have been trying on and off for two weeks and have still not managed an ok photograph. In Kepler’s 9+ years I have managed only one really good photo of her – mind you a lot fo this is that it is difficult to get a good shot due to her dark colour and longish fur around the face hiding her eyes.

Now now Steve, I had to go to Google to find out what ‘bokeh’ meant – maybe it’d have been easier to refer to ‘the out-of-focus’ effect eh ?

I’d have to say that is a *superb* photograph of Buster. The focus and exposure are spot on for his face, which is the important factor. The camera has actually chosen an incredibly small depth of field – even the hairs on the back of Buster’s head are out of focus. If you view that image so that it’s about a 7″x5″ image the grass just looks gently OoF.

Of course, you can’t expect wonders in terms of compact cameras due to their smaller optics, but regardless, Alec’s got a brilliant picture there. Now, we just need to get him oop North and see if he can manage the same for our two.

Lessee. I make it seven whiskers over his right eye and 12 over his left eye (there’s a very short one there).
