   Congrats! <br> Paper is probably cheap (at least in the US I dont worry about it, I can get 500 sheets for between $3 -$5), but the first refill will kill ya! <br> Unless, of course, you can find a great deal at that as well! <br>

   didn’t your parents spend a day (during your Troubled Youth) instructing you in the fint art of TCO [Total Cost of Ownership]?

   Years ago, I was given (yes, GIVEN) an HP DeskJet printer. Yes, 1.0. A ream (500 sheets) of paper was US$5. However, a Genuine HP Cartridge ™ was US$25. So the cost per page was .. uh .. $30/500 = 6¢ per page. For decidedly streaked hardcopy, whose ink never hardened – even months later, any nearby liquid turned my hardcopy into a puddle.

   I eventually came to my senses and bought a laser printer, which is now 8 years old and produces far better results. Yes, the paper costs the same, and the laser cartridges are about $125, but they last and last and last .. and never dry out like the inkjet.

   Yeah, I considered getting a small laser, but they sensible cheapest ones I was looking at were 80 quid, and although they would do reams of B&W cheaply, there would be no experimentation with colour, no pictures, etc.

   If I wanted a minimal TCO solution, I would have kept the sparcprinter; as it is, the inkjet will be more pain and i accept that. The trade-off will be in “fun”.

   At least the PIXMA has separate tanks, including an extra big one for text.

   I have, this very day, bought a new Epson Stylus Photo R340 printer after the ink in the old Stylus C66 ran out and the cost of the ink replacement (£50) wasn’t far off the price of a replacement (far better) printer. It’s all very ludicrous.

   It’s practically a case of “buy a set of ink and get a free printer” in the inkjet market. Laser printers are another matter entirely, however. They are about double the cost of an inkjet but the running costs per page after that are really pretty low.

   My Mum bought herself a photo printer for Christmas cos she thought they were so cute – she asked us to buy her the camera 😉

   I want a new toy….

   I’m trying to work out whether to get a better cameraphone or just by a cheapie digital camera. Grim has two pretty decent cameras and I’ve got a good SLR but I’d like to have more digital snapping power.

   Chipped cart trap

   I bought a iP 5200 Canon Printer last year,not knowing that the chipped cartridges could not be refilled successfully once they showed empty. Apparently each chip recognizes a refilled cartridge,and the light for that cartridge will not light up,because the chip says it is empty.(Even when it is actually full of ink)

   With the cost of original Canon cartridges being outrageously high, I sure as hell won’t be buying another Canon Printer with their chipped cartridges. Canon can shove their chipped cartridges where the sun don’t shine.

   Totally pinged off.

   I totally agree with Lancelot. I purchased the same printer and when I had the carts refilled all these error messages came up. After pressing numerous buttons again and again, I was able to run through 2 refilled carts. After that all of the lights went out and the Canon just would not work until all of the carts were replaced with new genuine Canon ones. With the price of their genuine carts,I do not intend to buy another Canon Printer. I will probably buy a Brother Printer when I have used up the ink in the Canon Printer.Brother printers do not use chipped carts—-well not yet 🙂
