mmm… i always reckoned PKI was overrated…
After development delays and cost overruns, the Royal Mail has officially pulled the plug on its ViaCode digital certificate project.
Launched back in March, 1999, ViaCode was to be an encrypted authentication and email technology for businesses. At the time of its launch, the Royal Mail was looking to become a central authentication authority for email.
In the post-dot.com crash, and with heavy losses in its day-to-day U.K. mail operations, the Royal Mail said that the ViaCode project is being cut because it is not making any money.
In a press statement, the Royal Mail said it believes that ViaCode is a good product and fits well with its core business, but is unable to sustain investment in the business because its “revenues have been insufficient to achieve profitability.”
