I grew-up in walking boots, doc-martens, and in trainers/sneakers.
When I was young and my family were living in the USA these latter were typically black Converse High-Tops, the original Chucks.
Converse are hard to get in the UK – expecially in halfsizes – but on a recent visit to California I bought a pair, partly out of nostalgia but also out of the suspicion that they’ll be a really good unicycling shoe. They’re not quite the same as they were pre-takeover, but most of the design cues are still there, and they’re light.
So I walked into the conference room and Valerie took one look down at my feet and said: “Ah, Converse. Are they back ‘in’?”
<sigh>
