Smoking ban in all pubs and clubs

MPs have voted by a huge margin to ban smoking from all pubs and private members’ clubs in England. Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt said the change, expected to take effect in summer 2007, would “save thousands of people’s lives”.

Ministers gave a free vote amid fears Labour MPs could rebel against plans to exempt clubs and pubs not serving food.

The Commons decided by a margin of 200 to impose a ban on smoking in all enclosed public spaces

No music, no smoking… next will be no alcohol.

And I don’t even smoke…

We have had a smoking ban in Ireland for over a year and it’s working out great. Clothes don’t stink anymore and it’s pleasant to eat food without all the smoke around

I don’t doubt it, in fact I am rather looking forwards to the benefits in the same way I can go out for an evening when in California and come back to the hotel without having to immediately dump all my clothes into the laundry bag, since they too have a smoking ban.

However: unlike most people I am not always convinced that just because I would appreciate something, therefore it is something that should be backed-up by law; to be so would set up conflicts within myself, like for instance:

    – Like many ramblers/hikers, I appreciate the peace and quiet of the countryside, and enjoy being able to utilise it for that purpose.

    – I also enjoy the freedom to explore muddy green lanes on my dirtbike, which I attempt to do conscientiously and courteously, without disruption to other people.

However the latter freedoms have been seriously curtailed within the UK within the last year, by similarly narrow legislation which was vocally backed by landownders lobby groups, and the likes of Janet Street-Porter and the Ramblers Association – who seem to consider all trailriders to be an odious threat to their peace and quiet.

So: I’m not a fan of using legislation to solve social problems or to enforce behaviour. Unfortunately it seems that our Government, is…
