The Hairy Bikers go forth for Foodieism

Remember these guys about whom I reported in January’05?

Well it sounds like they got their series – AND that BMW-UK got to them, according to the inestimable Mike Werner

It looks like the English BBC TV are getting ready for a food fight ! The USA has got Biker Billy {link} on his Harley, cooking up all sorts of recipes. Now, the UK has The Hairy Bikers on their BMW R1200GS, travelling around the world, cooking up a mean meal.

Lost ?? You will be after these messages….. seriously, the BBC are launching a new TV program highlighting two motorcycle riding chefs/presenters, Simon King and Dave Myers. They don’t call themselves chefs, not even cooks, they call themselves “Foodies” !

Launching next week on BBC2 (17Jan at 20:30 UK time), the two travel to the far corners of the world on their trusty BMW R1200GS motorcycles. They combine adventure riding and cooking ! Not a bad combination ! Where do I sign up ???

In the first two episodes, the two ride their motorcycles in Namibia, where they cook crocodile satay (=peanut sauce), ostrich eggs and crayfish. During the program they ride some 1,000 km off-road. Further episodes sees them traveling exotic Isle of Man, Ireland, Transylvania, Turkey, Vietnam and Mexico. Sounds like a more digestible version of the Long Way Round….

The episodes will eventually find themselves on a DVD, and you’ll be able to buy a cookbook.

…I think I’ll skip the cookbook, but it does highlight two of my favourite topics, so I’ll probably watch it.

Plus: it is further evidence of the breaking of “sportsbike culture” in the UK. No longer do you have to be on a Fireblade or a Ducati 748 to have street-cred.

Although – speaking as a R1200GS owner – I would have preferred these guys to have struck with their Triumphs. The GS could end-up overmarketed in the next year or two – Long Way Round mk II, etc – plus I appreciate variety…

I staggered to this blog via technorati tags (motorbikes). It’s good to see other bikers what blog out there. I agree with you about the de-superbiking of UK riders. But I think, to the right people, all bikes have always had ‘cred’. It’s just those chicken-stripped power-rangers that only come out to play 3 sundays a year who look down on non-sportsbike riders.

I must confess though, I own a Thundercat but I like to think of it as more of a bloody fast and comfortable commuter than a kneepad warriors toy.

I will keep visiting now I know you’re here.

I think tv could use a few good, well thought out biker shows other than building competitions. Alot of people love the thought of living the life of a biker, but have too many family/work and other obligations to be “allowed” to. I believe a tv show about the life of a biker, especially one that traveled to amazing places would allow the average joe/biker wanna be to live vicariously through it.
