there is only one acceptable thing to hit in these cases and it's "the fucking brakes"

the car needs to keep figuring out how to dip dodge duck dive and dodge until its brain and/or body don't exist anymore to keep thinking and trying it

and conveniently for us, "keep trying to not hit things until you don't exist anymore" is the default position for computers to do. "fuck it hit that one" is harder to write than "avoid avoid avoid"

also conveniently for us, a car that is able to meaningfully decide what to hit and make it happen is a car that can decide not to hit, by turning off the engine and using it as a momentum sink for the drivetrain. and a car that can't do that is way beyond collision liability
