If “The #Wellerman” was a swag-bearing representative of a #Whaling contract company, that means the #Whalers were #GigEconomy workers? #SeaShanty

The sea shanty “Soon May The Wellerman Come” [c.1860-70] continues its chorus with “And bring us sugar and tea and rum,” and thus illustrates that Weller Bros were major suppliers of shore whalers supplies. “The workers at these bay-whaling stations were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco.”[6] The shanty went viral on the social media site TikTok in 2021, as the social isolation of teenage whalers was seen as analogous to that of youngsters isolated under Covid-19 lockdown.[7]
