Subject: Amendment to the RIP act…
To: UK-SECURITY@JISCMAIL.AC.UK
Those with a political leaning (or an interest in privacy) might want to look at the newly updated STAND website:
In a nutshell, last year the RIP (Regulation of Investigatory Powers) Act was passed in Parliament which allows the Police, Customs and Excise and the Secret Services access to “traffic data.” (In other words, which websites you visit, who you send email to, all without a court order.)
Next Tuesday an amendment is being debated in the Houses of Parliament which would extend the list of authorities that could demand traffic data from that relatively restricted list to just about anybody that might want it (the list is available in a link from the website, but includes such choice institutions as the Food Standards Agency, any Fire Authority and the Post Office).
