I really have no idea how successful this will be, but amongst the goodies to soon be arriving on yet another (hooray!) Channel4-Themed Channel – More4 – will be the “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” [en.wikipedia.org] on a 1-day delay.
Some of my colleagues in the USA worship this program – but then the poor chaps don’t get enough proper news anyway, so it might just be out of the sheer respite from other American news programming.
I saw a recent episode – something last week with George Clooney – and it struck me as a jokes-clips-and-and-chatshow pastiche, which now as I think about it seems awfully similar to something Channel4 used to do in a late-night slot with some lanky, angular comedian – Ian <somebody>? – and a totty female co-host, contemporary news clips, jokes, and some manner of celebrity interview.
Was that also a “Daily Show”? Maybe Ch4 tried floating their own version and it flopped. I quite forget, but that may well be the point.
If you can get more celebrities on Jonathan Ross and political satire 24×7 in the entire populace – every time they broadcast something from The Commons – what’ll distinguish the American program from any other chat-show when it’s broadcast over here?
Well, perhaps it can tap into the middle-class aspirational thirtysomething “The West Wing”-watching community which grew to prevalence a couple of years ago?
Perhaps it can provide an antidote? 8->
