The goal of getting people to jump through hoops is to gain assurance. The hoops must be substantial and challenging in order to work. By working, they reduce risk.

    The great prophet Schneier once wrote that if he forgets his online banking credentials he wants it to be as hard as possible for him to get replacements.

    If it’s hard for him it’s 10x harder for anyone who is not him.
