Appropriate postscript to the Menezes affair?

There’s a lot of pro-shooting, anti-shooting, it could happen again hot air going on, but I find this most apt as a summary of my views:

[news.bbc.co.uk]

Surely the most frightening thing is how quickly we have come to share the terrorists’ evident belief that innocent people must die.

All I’d say is, that I’d disagree with the use of the word MUST. There is no compulsion here. MAY die. Well that sounds a little different.

But it is always sad when it comes down to violence.

I find it incredible that up till now I’ve had no idea that the police who shot Menezes were plain clothes, and from reading the BBC comments page I suspect that most of the people who left comments there supporting the police didn’t either.

The most telling comment I saw was:

A gang of BNP/National Front men look very similar to young plain clothes police officers dressed in their casual clothes and trainers. In this climate there are attacks going on by violent and misguided British men on ‘foreigners’. If I saw a bunch of these ‘thuggish’ looking guys shouting and running after me, my survival instinct would kick in and I would be off.
