All forms of federated protocol are the worst bits of centralisation combined with the worst bits of distribution.

@alecm Surely, in this context, the worst bit of centralisation is everything being unavailable, and not just services from one provider. The technical impact of a big Matrix server going down (for other servers) is a growing queue (as with email).

That’s a fair comment but then you get into arguments about whether you want distributed outages with global impact, or centralised outages with global impact, with the understanding that the centralised ones may be more disastrous however are also likely to be more quickly recoverable. It’s the old problem about whether you want to fly in a aircraft with a single engine that is highly reliable or multiple engines which may not be
