I’ll bet (if any strategic wisdom remains in the Trump administration at all) the US government is about to do an about-turn re: trying to prevent publication of open weight models, lest the world adopt Chinese ones instead:

Last year, a bill called the ENFORCE Act—which would have given the Commerce Department the authority to ban frontier open-weight models from release—nearly made it into the National Defense Authorization Act. Prominent, U.S. government-funded proposals from the AI safety community would have similarly banned frontier open-weight models, or given the federal government the power to do so.
Yes, that would be the fastest way for the Americans to eject themselves from the world of innovation in deployed AI.
