1) Given the impending Trump administration’s illiberal proposed actions (e.g. below) isn’t it good for Americans to have end-to-end secure, encrypted messengers that are free from Government oversight, such as Signal, WhatsApp, & the new Facebook Messenger?

2) Should Britons eschew such technologies on the grounds that we trust our Government?

It’s a straightforward question, and one which I have previously posed elsewhere: obviously we, as a liberal democracy, can applaud the deployment of end-to-end secure, encrypted messenger software in illiberal places such as oppressive regimes and warzones where such technologies can “level the ground” in favour of the oppressed.

But of course we don’t need it here, we’re civilised and better than that, yes?
