I’m dialling in the new coffee grinder for espresso…

…and I love the results. I’m not a huge coffee snob but I am a huge coffee nerd and I find my fun in wringing the best coffee I can out of the equipment I have available — or that I can design & 3D print.

The increasingly limiting factor for the past few years has been my grinder — a beloved 7yo Baratza Virtuoso with various minor tweaks and hacks, which has probably ground ~100kg of coffee in its time; but it has now been boxed for emergency use and replaced by a flat-burr DF64.

To be a bit “Spinal Tap” the most notable thing is that where previously I had to use settings 0..3 out of 40 for espresso, now I am hunting for the espresso sweet spot somewhere between 12..20 out of 90, and it can still go so much finer.

And it — the coffee — is sweet.
