“If you let Google have your data, why not the NHS?” | …or, indeed, the Police? The security services? Glib, dehumanising foolishness from @phillipinman …

I have literally watched Sir David Omand (ex-GCHQ) stand on stage and make the argument that “Amazon and Google have all of this information about you, why can’t the government have it too?”; I was not expecting to see the same from the Observer, all framed in techlash “own the billionaire-tards” terms.

Answer: because they are third & fourth parties in the relationships, and the data was accrued is for a specific purpose rather than to be shared willy-nilly without informed approval of the data subject.

Streeting is also wrestling with acute staff shortages, and better use of technology will help him overcome that. If UK households offer their information to the NHS in the way they do to Google et al, health service provision could be cheaper and more effective. And the health service could be a testbed for a national ID card that allows for the digitisation of more areas of government, reducing costs and tackling fraud.

  1. @alecm the anti big-tech tone is odd though, absent legislation (eg EU) I would absolutely expect the UK government to sell citizen data to big tech in exchange for money or services.

This sounds like la la land “the government always knows best” hogwash.

Also, the “big tech” overlords can’t kick down your door in the early AM, arrest you, and put you in prison.

Part of the root of the problem here is too many human beings, and that some of those humans are convinced they know better than you how you should live your life. Whether they are in the private or public sector.

Most of us like to share, if that weren’t the case, then “social media” wouldn’t be so popular.

It’s a smear to use the word “addicted” in describing how companies want customers to deal/feel about their products.

“It is the private sector that wants to use and manipulate digital information much more than the state could ever conceive of doing.”

What a load. Pot?t? potato, tom?t? tomato. Power drunk asses will use the means they can. In the U.S. lawyer$ working for major corp$ take a pay cut to “work for the government” for “public service” then after they’ve bastardized prominent legislation, they “retire from public service” and go back to the companies they previously worked for. Ka-ching! On the other hand some politicians stay in government far too long, thus term limits were enacted.

I’m not anti-capitalism, but dislike the lies and manipulation.

“Britain is very good at the marketing and sale of things that are bad for us.”

They should check out the Bible. Read about how much God liked what the Canaanites became expert at (ahem marketing). This is not about Britain. One might as well say the same thing about the U.S. and other locations.

There’s a decent middle ground between saying how awesome we are and how horrible we are. One problem is, who is willing to pay for that? We all want an income to pay for stuff. Clickbait sells better. ?

Did these health experts take a nice long look at how Sweden handled COVID better than so many other countries? … As I sit with my mother, daughter of a Swedish immigrant, she is practically demanding I get yet another COVID shot. She’s mostly unaware of what happens in Sweden and instead is bewildered by the U.S. main stream media.

Also worthy of note is how Google handled the cases of two parents concerned about their children, compared to what the government did.

Sorry if I spammed your blog. Time to go cook dinner. ?
