The problem — from the Home Office’s point of view — is that they want people to be safe online, but not so safe that they cannot be hacked or surveilled by the Home Office.

Alas, reality does not work this way. There’s no reliable way to have an “it’s okay, you’re being hacked by law enforcement” switch in the software stack.

The government is seeking to update the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA) 2016. The Home Office said it supported privacy-focused tech but added that it also had to keep the country safe.
