In this piece, Blue Sky Disney reaffirms that Mort was dropped because of rights issues, with the writer illuminating that the project died because Disney needed to buy the film rights to the entire Discworld saga just to make Mort. That plan proved unfeasible for the studio and Musker and Clements were already at work on a new project.

Why Disney Bailed on Turning Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Into an Animated Film | …spoiler: they wanted to drop the character of Death + would have had to buy the rights for all Discworld characters a-la Winnie the Pooh

@alecm I would love to see the entire disc world saga correctly done (and not dropping a main character). The watch, the witches, DEATH (and of course the DEATH of rats), the Unseen University. Would all be wonderful stories to watch if done correctly. The books are absolutely amazing. But they’d need The Last Of Us/House of the Dragon/Good Omens style treatment or better.
