If you want to live a simple life: use one protocol per app, and use as many apps as you need. Don’t try to have one app which does all things and/or offers multiple identities, because either you, or the platform, will mess it up.
One thing the Apple Messages discussions have raised is a problem I’ve found a few people have run into but are unaware of the fix. If you have previously had a iPhone on a phone number that you now are using with a non-Apple phone, be sure you unregister your number with Apple’s iMessages server. 1/2

Until you do this, iPhones will send any text messages their owners try to send to you to the Apple Messages account and NOT to your new non-Apple phone. So if you find friends wondering why you aren’t replying to their texts or it’s clear you’ve missed some, this is very likely the problem. 2/2
