A question for friends who are home #solar-power experts, and/or who have experience in dealing with charging 12V “deep-cycle” batteries for electrical projects: Are “smart” chargers really “smart”?

  • I have a garden-pathway-lighting project
  • I have got some decent 12V lighting and clip-on wiring that I will use
  • Eventually I plan to get a solar panel to trickle-charge a 12V battery; but with winter coming, mounting one of those and getting it working is a stretch goal
  • So, for the moment, I plan to recharge from mains supply an inexpensive (lead-acid?) 80..100Ah 12V deep-cycle battery manually, every 2 weeks or so, on the basis of the attached computation
  • Recharging a deep-cycle battery is apparently best done slowly and gradually, but all the chargers on the market claim to be (a) automatic and (b) fast
  • QUESTION: so how do they know that they should recharge slowly with a deep-cycle battery, or do they not care? Is this really an issue?
