Digital Needle – A Virtual Gramophone

Old to some, no doubt, but new to me:

Remember those flat round things you may have found lying around the house. Those that never really worked well as flying saucers? Well, the other day I happenned to have a good look at one through a magnifying glass. I was able to discern something waveform’esqe in the shape of the grooves. I thought, “groovy, there must be a way to extract something sensible off of that” (actual thought quoted). At which point I came up with some great excuses ^H^H^H^H reasons to have a go

…leading to his attempts to decode a LP record, using an image scanner.

Surprising, is probably the best word.

Hmm, very reminiscent of a prototype “contactless” turntable made about 5 years ago, which used a laser rather than a scanner to read the groove. It was supposed to be the acme of record players as designed, but once built, it apparently didn’t sound particularly wonderful when compared to the best the needle-based turntables could offer.
